Book Review: Sweetie!: 50 Delectable Treats

Sweetie!: 50 Delectable Treats is an adorable recipe book filled with 50 mouth-watering treats to tempt you into a sugar-enduced coma. Amen.

The recipes are taken from The Hardie Grant Test Kitchen and are all illustrated (not a photograph in sight) by Daniella Germain.

I found the recipes easy to follow including plenty of detail (imperial, metric and American cup conversions) with clear content that makes up for the fact you don’t really see what you are making – my only concern. However, I will hold my hands up and confess that may come down to my lack of confidence in baking – ah macaroons how you taunt me.

I’ve yet to make a recipe from Sweetie! but will be putting a few ideas together from the book when I have a little tea party this summer in our local woods. As soon as the sun pops out I’ll be paying homage with a G&T popsicle! Hurrah.

The book is compact and great for the baker (and appreciator of good illustration!) in your life. You can purchase Sweetie!: 50 Delectable Treats from Amazon for just £6.99 and I thoroughly recommend you do!

P.S Thank you Hardie Grant Books for the review copy!

Tote of the week: Motel Tote Bag in Badger Print

This Badger tote from Motel (£9) pleases me so. What a dapper bag to store my library books in! I do like a nice badger, especially one that wears a red bow tie. Happy sigh.

So as the cold is working its magic outside, I’m planning a few things for the weekend. Cue the bullet points!

  • Going to see my gorgeous nephew and family
  • Walk in the snow (if it descends), followed by a tasty roast dinner cooked by friends
  • Make a card for my Valentine…

  • Finally, a lazy lie in, perhaps?

What do you have planned? Happy Weekend!

Bake, read and grow!

As per norm, at this time of year, many people have asked what resolutions I’ll be making for 2012. I like to think that you can make fresh starts, have new goals or change your life no matter the time of year. There is a lot of pressure in January to stop doing this or that when I think the focus should be more about the things you want to add to your life.

I have a few plans in mind for the year that I’m still pondering over (house, money, shop, blog and travel) but in the meantime I think it’s the small things that give me the sense of happiness I want to achieve in my life. It’s the lifestyle that I lead that maintains happiness – eating nice food, living in a comfortable and homely house in a pretty town, having love in my life, good health, enjoying time with friends and family and to read, write and create. That’s it really. That’s not to say I don’t have ambitions; there’s so much more I would like to do and achieve in my life. I think once you strip it all back though, it’s the small things.

So I thought it would be nice to list a few things that kept me in check last year that contributed to my happy lifestyle, followed by a couple of new things I’d like to add to it. As for the big stuff I’m still pondering…

Walking

We are so lucky to have the best countryside surrounding us. If I’m walking with friends/family or on my own it clears my mind of any stresses/anxieties, gives me chance to work off all that cake I eat and reminds me why I love living where I do. This year, I would like to attempt a walking routine. Once I’m walking I love it but getting me off the sofa and out into the cold takes a little persuasion!

Lighting candles

This sounds really silly but it’s a routine (trust me, I’m not a routine type of gal) that I’ve noticed I enjoy a lot. When the sun starts to set, I begin the process of popping round our tiny house lighting candles and oil burners and turning on our twinkle lights in the bedroom. It makes me feel happy, cosy and settled and welcomes the evening in gently – oh dear, I am silly.

Writing in notepad

Writing in my notepad(s) is a big deal to me. It not only keeps my dilly-dally brain free of clutter but I like the process of putting  pen to paper. I have 5 main notebooks that I use – one for blog ideas, for craft/design ideas, for thrifting and one for writing (play/character ideas). Then there’s a random one just for lists. I have a problem, I know.

Making tea

Oh tea. I cannot get over how it cheers me so. You know the deal already. Tea is awesome. The process of making tea is as comforting as a snuggly duvet.

Resolutions

As for resolutions, apart from making bread I already read and grow herbs – but not as much as I’d like. I want the following three resolutions to be a part of my daily life as much as checking emails and brushing my teeth!

Reading

We popped to the library the other day and have promised to go in each month to get our books and read, read, read. I tried last year to do the same but realised I need actual ‘reading time’ instead of trying to find time here and there. Ooh if you could recommend any books that you’ve enjoyed lately, I’d be grateful! Currently reading: The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald.

Bake bread

Reasons to bake bread – relaxing, fills the house with divine aromas and tastes goooood.

Grow!

I sowed a few seeds last Spring for our kitchen windowsill and didn’t do the best job at keeping up with them. I use herbs daily so it seems silly to keep buying them from the shop when I have plenty of seeds at my disposal (Mum has a stash!). I’d like our outside patch of grass to have a few nice pots and plants too. Must and WILL try better.

How about you? Have you made any resolutions this year?

Book Review: Celia Birtwell

When the Celia Birtwell book was handed to me by the postman, courtesy of Quadrille Craft, I was more than a little excited (I may have squealed at him – he thinks I’m crazy). Being the first book (long overdue) published on Celia,  I was curious to know more about the life and work of such an iconic British designer.

The book is hardback coffee table perfection, accompanied by sketches, artworks and personal photographs. But not only is the book a visual treat, it delivers such an inspirational kick, I wish I’d had the book years ago.

The book concentrates on the designers career span of over 50 years, from couture to home interiors and her collaboration with Topshop.  Rather than focusing on her personal life (relationship/partnership with Ossie Clark)  it is a biography that celebrates Celia’s work, ambition and inspirations.

The book makes a great gift for admirers of Celia’s work, design/fashion students or anyone with an interest in British Culture (holds hand up). The book has also persuaded me to buy this edition of  my favourite novel,Wuthering Heights, that she illustrated back in 2009. I must find a copy!

You can purchase the book from Amazon for £15.19.

Please note, I was sent this copy to review and was not paid for writing this post.

Tasty stews, Downton Abbey, Brett Anderson and a thrifted cardigan.

I’m feeling very optimistic today, quite positive and generally happy. I think it’s difficult sometimes to say this, without fear of tempting fate, but today I’m thinking what the hell? So there!

My weekend consisted of Lemsip (immune system at an all time low!), a scalp massager, working like a silly billy, listening to ‘Brittle Heart’ by Brett Anderson over and over (the most beautiful song), thrifty finds on my lunch break including; a red knit cardigan, maroon fitted trousers, a canvas regatta rucksack and an enamel jug to decant tasty hot alcoholic beverages! Watching Downton Abbey, plotting schemes and makery with some pretty fabric I bought, reading through the amazing talent that will be exhibiting at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair (very excited!), tasty stews, receiving gifts, watching City Of Men, red wine, our first Ocado delivery (great value and cheap delivery) and writing lots of nice lists…and breathe!

A thrifted red knit cardigan, regatta rucksack (gonna jazz it up a tad!), maroon fitted trousers. The only non thrifted item is this beautiful necklace the OH bought me. Pretty, non?

I'm looking forward to reading this DH Lawrence book, only 50p. Watching Certified Copy, courtesy of Love Film. Hatching plans of makery with these awesome retro fabrics (eBay) and I can't wait to write ideas in this leather notebook (a gift).

First stew of the season (Chicken & Chorizo), first red wine and first Ocado shop!

It was a fine weekend. How was yours?
